Week 1: Discussion – Computing Technology and Society

The early 1980’s were a time when gaming was brought up from simple card games to computer integration (Jones, 2013; Kudler, n.d.). Nintendo was originally a card gaming company that evolved into a video game company in the early 1980’s (Jones, 2013). Although, around 1983 the video gaming industry was on the verge of extinction due to the consumers boredom (Caruso, 2011; “Video game console”, 2014). The crash to the industry was devastating but Nintendo saw potential. The company overlooked the crash and decided to reform the industry. Initially, if a person wanted to video game, they would pay for arcades that were someplace in town or nearby (Miller, 2015). What Nintendo made changed that way of video gaming by prioritizing their own games that weren’t at the arcades (Jones, 2013). The Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) was developed as a device to put on your television at an affordable price to take home (Caruso, 2011). The system was much more than just a simple home entertainment system. Nintendo continued to invest in video games that were brand new exclusively to their NES (Caruso, 2014; Jones, 2013). Because the NES was simple and purchasable, people loved exploring the video game market again (Caruso, 2011). Today, video gaming is still a home entertainment system. But the simple enjoyment of the system exceeds that of video gaming. The entire home entertainment system is now used as a multimedia platform which has revolutionized our homes altogether.
